Across BC, BC Schizophrenia Society works with local community members on initiatives to build up the community while helping change the face of mental illness.

On July 8, to help engage youth in the community, BCSS Regional Educators Rhonda Kunco and Melissa Trowbridge joined local community organizations in the Port Alberni Valley to run a GooseChase Scavenger Hunt. This encouraged local youth to learn more about what community services and resources are available locally.

“I thought this was an excellent event for youth in the Port Alberni Valley,” said Melissa. ‘Teens were required to visit each service provider’s station and increase their knowledge of resources that are available to them in their community.”

“It was wonderful to share in their laughter as they had fun socializing with one another,” explained Rhonda.

Huge kudos to the Port Alberni Harm Reduction Round Table for Youth Services for such an excellent event, BCSS was happy to be part of it.

COVID-19 has impacted the Port Alberni Valley in many ways, including this year’s Annual Harm Reduction Event sponsored by Alberni District Secondary School. Melissa tells us, “It was nice to see it could be structured to meet the protocols around COVID-19 and be successful. “

Community events like this provide opportunities for BCSS to connect with youth who are impacted by mental illness. It highlights the service provided in the area for families and the community about schizophrenia.

If you would like to have BCSS at your event, please email info@bcss.org or call 1-888-888-0029 to connect with a local BCSS Regional Educator about your event.
